What exactly is a pediatric dentist?

There are nine nationally recognized dental specialties in Canada. Pediatric dentistry is one of those specialties.  A pediatric dentist has additional training, typically two to three years following dental school, in the primary and comprehensive dental management of children from birth to young adulthood. In essence, pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. In Canada, pediatric dentists are also trained to treat individuals of all ages with special healthcare needs. What is Dr. Perusini’s story?

Dr. Darsi Perusini chose to pursue pediatric dentistry in his third year of dental school. He was inspired by one of his mentors, Dr. Dennis Bedard, who was one of Edmonton’s first pediatric dentists. In 2009, Darsi moved to Toronto to complete a one year residency at the Mount Sinai Hospital. During this time, he gained invaluable experience in special care dentistry, emergency dentistry and oral surgery. From here, he completed a three year residency and master’s degree in pediatric dentistry at the University of Toronto. He spent a good amount of time at the Hospital for Sick Children, one of Canada’s largest teaching hospitals.

Darsi and the entire team at Avenue PD look forward to meeting you. We pride ourselves on delivering quality dental care to children from Edmonton and its surrounding communities, northern and central Alberta and northern Canada.
