Sealing Out Tooth Decay
Pit-and-fissure sealants have been applied to permanent molars for almost fifty years to help prevent and control tooth decay. How exactly do they work?
First, you must identify children at risk for decay. If a child presents to our office with a history of cavities on his or her baby teeth including multiple fillings or extractions, Dr. Perusini will categorize that child as high risk. Identification is important because the goal of sealing permanent molars is to prevent cavities in individuals who are at risk for decay.
Next, Dr. Perusini will conduct a thorough exam and take bitewing x-rays to ensure that there are no actual cavities on the permanent molars. Sealing over decayed tooth structure is not advised.
The final step is application of the sealants. Isolation is critical, meaning that the teeth must be dry for the sealants to work. Dr. Perusini, along with his hygienist and dental assistants, will apply the sealants in the grooves of the permanent molars to prevent bacteria from finding a home in the depths of the teeth. The sealants may need to be adjusted or repaired in the future depending on how they hold up.
