It Takes Two

General Anesthesia

If your child is scheduled for dental treatment under general anesthesia, you might be wondering how this will play out.

Our Approach To General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a state of controlled unconsciousness. During a general anesthetic, medicines are used to put your child to sleep so that they are unaware of surgery, and do not move or feel pain throughout the procedure.

Avenue Pediatric Dentistry is happy to work closely with a qualified team of board certified medical anesthesiologists. What this means is that any child we take to the operating room will be sedated by an experienced physician specifically trained to administer general anesthesia. This is very different from operator-anesthesia. Operator-anesthesia is a model where the dentist is also the individual who administers the anesthetic (one person doing two jobs).

Dr. Perusini does not subscribe to this model because he feels that it is better to have two people working together to ensure the best outcome for their patients (i.e., the anesthesiologist focuses intensely on the sedation while the dentist focuses diligently on the dentistry).

If your child is scheduled to undergo dental treatment under general anesthesia, and you have concerns, please do not hesitate to give our office a call so that we can answer your questions.
